Guangdong accounted for 14% of China's total R&D expenditure, ranking first nationwide, according to the 2026 China Regional Science and Technology Innovation Evaluation Report released on September 11.

The report ranks Guangdong fourth in comprehensive sci-tech innovation capability, second in innovation input and innovation-driven development, and fifth in innovation output. Its high-tech industry climbed one spot.

Shanghai, Beijing, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Tianjin lead the country in comprehensive sci-tech innovation, with Guangdong among the top tier.
