On August 12, the gymnasium of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) buzzed with excitement as the "Global Culture Challenge" got underway.
The event was a highlight of the university's 2026 PLACE (Playshop for Language and Cultural Exchange) Summer Camp—over 200 international students from 45 countries were randomly divided into teams to compete in challenges centered on traditional attire, language, cuisine, and dance.
Beyond the spirited competitions, many students also explored Guangzhou's cityscape. Anna and Svetlana marveled at the skyline after visiting the Canton Tower, exclaiming, "We didn't expect the views along the Pearl River to be so beautiful, or the city to have so many skyscrapers. It's truly stunning."
Teddy, on the other hand, was drawn to the cultural charm of Beijing Road, describing it as "a microcosm of traditional Guangzhou," where the historic arcaded buildings (qilou) offer both shade and shelter from the rain—a design he found remarkably thoughtful.
