Guangzhou has climbed to 11th place in the 2026 Xinhua-Baltic International Shipping Centre Development Index, up one spot from 2025. Having surpassed Tokyo last year, the city further advanced to overtake Houston in the latest ranking.

Since first being included in the index in 2015 at 28th place, Guangzhou has moved up a total of 17 spots in more than a decade, demonstrating steady growth. Domestically, it ranks fourth in China, trailing Shanghai, Hong Kong and Ningbo Zhoushan.

Jointly compiled by Xinhua's China Economic Information Service and the Baltic Exchange, the index report was released on July 10. It evaluates 43 global shipping centers across three dimensions: port infrastructure, shipping services, and business environment.
