Guangdong's core artificial intelligence industry exceeded 300 billion yuan ($44.11 billion) in scale last year, growing at over 40 percent and accounting for roughly a quarter of the national total, a senior provincial official said on June 29.

Wu Shiwen, deputy director of the Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission, made the remarks to visiting journalists in Guangzhou, where he outlined the province's plans to accelerate the cultivation and development of future industries.

The provincial government has issued an action plan targeting three broad sectors: future intelligence, future life and health, and future energy, Wu said.

On the research infrastructure side, Guangdong has built a multi‑tier laboratory system led by the Pengcheng and Guangzhou national laboratories and supported by 24 provincial‑level laboratories, 26 national key laboratories, and 35 Guangdong‑Hong Kong‑Macao joint laboratories, Wu said.

The province has also developed 10 major national science and technology infrastructure facilities, including the Spallation Neutron Source, High‑Intensity Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility, and Human Cell Lineage Research Facility, alongside synthetic biology research platforms and brain mapping and simulation facilities.
