The Hurun Research Institute released its 2026 Global Unicorn Index in Guangzhou on June 25, with Guangzhou claiming 24 unicorn companies — up one from last year — ranking 12th worldwide and 5th among Chinese cities.

Two newcomers powered the city's growth: TRIO METAL, a high-end metal composites maker valued at 20 billion yuan, and Top Toy, the trendy toy retail brand under Miniso Group, valued at 9 billion yuan.
"We chose Guangzhou for this launch because of our deep connection with this city," said Rupert Hoogewerf, Hurun's founder. "I love Guangzhou. It has an abundance of role-model entrepreneurs, and its defining trait is inclusiveness — attracting top global talent."
Unicorns remain the core engine of the new global economy, serving as a key benchmark for regional innovation vitality and industrial potential.
