With the Dragon Boat Festival (June 19) approaching, Guangzhou villagers have begun preparations for the annual dragon boat races. The first step is the "Dragon Awakening" ceremony — unearthing the boats from riverbed mud where they were buried for preservation after last year's races.
On May 24, a grand "Dragon Awakening" ceremony took place in Pantang Village, Liwan District, as villagers unearthed the dragon boats from Liwan Lake. The highlight of the event was the emergence of "Renwei No.1," a boat with a history of over 400 years.
