In 1909, a ceremonial pastry began its journey, carried south by people from Guangdong. Part of it stayed in Xiguan, Guangzhou, becoming Zanji Bakery; part sailed across the sea to Malaysia, becoming Phoenix Cake Shop. In Guangzhou, it is the nostalgic taste of the neighborhood; in Malaysia, it is the essential “bride's pastry” in Chinese weddings. From Guangdong to Nanyang —shared pastry, shared root.
