Column Introduction

From the bittersweet flavor of herbal tea to the rich aroma of coffee, from the tender of White Cut Chicken to the dazzling Pearl River nightscape, from the brick carvings of Xiguan to the vibrant city life, Guangzhou invites you to discover its unique blend of tradition and modernity.

Welcome to "Wow with Guangzhou"—a creative short video series co-produced by School of Journalism and Communication, Guangzhou University & Guangzhou Daily Global. Here, young talents will decode Guangzhou in Gen-Z style.

Why isn't "herbal tea" translated as "cool tea"?

Recently, students from Guangzhou University's School of Journalism and Communication joined a unique class with foreign teacher and blogger Gary Leonard to answer the question.  The class was moved from the classroom to a traditional herbal tea shop and the museum of herbal tea in Guangzhou Cultural & Art Centre, where herbal tea exhibition replaced blackboards and  PowerPoint presentations.

The teaching material was the intangible cultural heritage itself: Lingnan's "magic herbs". Together, the students and Gary explored the health benefits, wisdom, and stories behind herbal tea. In this way, Gary decoded the wisdom infused in herbal tea, while the students gained a deeper understanding of Lingnan culture.
