Guangzhou Baiyun Railway Station, one of Asia's largest railway transportation complexes, began operation on Tuesday, with the first train departing in the morning for Shantou, in eastern Guangdong province.
The station serves as the departure and destination for multiple train lines, including the Beijing-Guangzhou High-Speed Railway, Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, Guangzhou-Meizhou-Shantou Railway, and Guangzhou-Maoming Railway, helping further enhance the passenger capacity of the railway service in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province.

As a new urban landmark in Guangzhou, the station is a fourth-generation high-speed railway hub built according to the latest design concepts, according to Song Baocang, chief engineer of the station project at the China Railway Construction Corporation.
"It is also one of the most technologically advanced and modern railway station complexes in the world," said Song.
The station is integrated with coordinated design, construction, and development between the urban construction and railway elements, creating a sense of unity between the railway project and the local urban development, according to Song.
Covering a total area of 453,000 square meters in the city's Baiyun district, the station has three main tracks, 21 tracks for departure and arrival, and 21 passenger platforms.

Designed for speeds up to 350 kilometers per hour, the new line holds significance as a coastal high-speed railway within China's expansive high-speed railway network.
The substantial section of the line links Shantou South Railway Station with Shanwei. The final leg, extending 20 km and incorporating an undersea tunnel in Shantou Coastal Bay, is currently under construction. The timetable for its full opening remains undisclosed.
