Video | Mega Projects of China: The Three-North Shelter Forest Program 双语视频:大国重器系列之三北工程
语音播报

The Three-North Shelter Forest Program is China's first trans-century and trans-regional mega ecological project.

In response to the serious aeolian sand disaster and soil erosion in the North, Northwest and Northeast regions of China, this mega shelterbelt project was approved and launched by the State Council in 1978.

The Program spans the north, northwest and northeast of China, including 725 counties in 13 provinces (municipalities and autonomous regions).

By far, the Three-North Forest Shelter Program has been implemented for 44 consecutive years, preserving an accumulated afforestation area of 452 million mu (about 30 million hectares).

The "intangible" achievements of the Program include:

-- having enlightened the ecological awareness of the Chinese;

-- having provided an exemplary model in green and low-carbon lifestyle and way of production;

--having promoted the ecological progress.

The Program has become a successful model of adhering to the concept of "Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets."
