China will establish pilot zones for comprehensive reform of basic education in 12 provincial-level regions, the Ministry of Education said on Oct. 18.

教育部10月18日印发通知，部署在12个省市区建立基础教育综合改革实验区。

The building of the pilot zones in the designated regions, including Shanghai, Guangdong, Sichuan, Hebei and Fujian, will be focused on advancing high-quality development of education, which entails major tasks such as easing the academic burden on students undergoing compulsory education, said the ministry.

教育部表示，在上海、广东、四川、河北、福建等指定地区建立实验区，将以推进教育高质量发展为重点，其中包括减轻义务教育阶段学生学业负担等主要任务。
