Guangzhou is on track to build three new metro lines to connect with Dongguan, another city in Greater Bay Area, according to Dongguan's rail transit authorities. They are Metro Lines 28, 22 and 25.

Stretching 107 kilometers, the east-west Line 28 is projected to span four cities — Guangzhou, Foshan, Shenzhen and Dongguan, with 13 stations in Guangzhou, eight in Foshan and seven in Dongguan.

As per the construction scheme, the subway route is expected to start from Foshan, pass through Liwan, Haizhu, Huangpu and Zengcheng districts in Guangzhou and terminate in Dongguan, where it will then connect with Shenzhen through the Dongguan-Shenzhen Intercity Railway (莞深城际) that is currently under construction.

Construction on the subway line is anticipated to start within the year, according to Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission.

Line 25

Line 25 is expected to connect with Dongguan Rail Transit Line 1 (under construction) at its planned Huangpu Passenger Port station (黄埔客运港站). It will run through Huangpu Lingang Economic Development Zone (southern area) (黄埔临港经济区(南片)) and interchange with the east extension of Line 5 within Guangzhou city.

The metro line is also projected to extend to downtown Foshan, according to a rail construction scheme revealed by Guangzhou's Planning and Natural Resources Bureau. This would make traveling among the three cities much easier for subway riders once Line 25 and Dongguan Rail Transit Line 1 are completed.

The construction time of Line 25, however, has yet to be decided.

Line 22

Under construction, Line 22 is scheduled to further stretch to Dongguan and Shenzhen, bridging three populated zones—Science City in Guangzhou's Nansha district, Binhaiwan Bay Area & Dongguan Port in Dongguan (东莞滨海湾新区) and Science City in Shenzhen's Guangming district (深圳市光明区科学城).

The outbound extension line may start from Guangzhou's Nansha Passenger Port and terminate at Shenzhen's Guangmingcheng station (光明城站), bridging the Zhongshan-Nansha-Humen intercity Railway (中南虎城际), Shiziyang waters at the Pearl River estuary, Dongguan's Binhaiwan Bay Area & Dongguan Port and Shenzhen's Songgang station (松岗站).

Within Guangzhou, the metro line is to shuttle passengers between Panyu Square and Fangcun (番禺广场—芳村), cutting across Nansha, Panyu and Liwan districts and connecting railway transport hubs like Guangzhou South Railway Station and Bai'e'tan (白鹅潭). Its northern extension route is projected to reach the brand-new T3 terminal (under construction) of Baiyun International Airport, linking the intercity line with the city's aviation hub.

The section of Line 22 traveling within Guangzhou is estimated to start service in two phases in 2021.
