The 17th edition of the Panorama of French Cinema, organized by UniFrance and the French Embassy in China, is taking place in Guangzhou and other major Chinese cities. Seven French movies are being screened in Guangzhou's cinemas from January 14 to 29.

The Guangzhou section of event kicked off at Zhujiang New Town on January 14, with the screening of "La Vérité" ("The Truth"), directed by Hirokazu Koreeda. Some 100 guests attended the opening ceremony.

Siv Leng Chhuor, consul general of France in Guangzhou, gave her new year greetings to the guests. She said that French movies are very popular among Chinese audiences. "For a long time, the art of movies has always established close ties between China and France and the two cultures," the consul general said. "'The Truth' is a multicultural movie directed by a Japanese director, which deeply describes the bond among us all." She hoped the seven French movies could help people learn more about French culture and the life of French people.

All seven films were created in the past two years. "La Vérité" was directed by Palme d'Or winner Koreeda and stars Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche, Ethan Hawke and Clémentine Grenier. "Un Triomphe" won Best Comedy at the European Film Awards. "Sibyl" was a Palme d'Or nominee at the Cannes Film Festival. "J'ai Perdu Mon Corps" won Best Animated Film at the César Awards. "A L'Abordage" was selected to be shown in the Panorama section at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival. "Fête de Famille" also stars veteran actress Deneuve, and "La Belle Epoque" gathers a group of French stars, including Daniel Auteuil, Guillaume Canet and Doria Tillier.
