In Hangzhou, a fairly well-off city in east China's Zhejiang Province, the "Xihu Food Bank" has been in operation for several months.

The food bank aims to serve as a depository for surplus food that is then redistributed to those in need. Households enjoying minimum living guarantee and social security benefits can apply for food from the food bank. Meanwhile, companies and nearby supermarkets can donate food like bagged rice or cooking oil.

西湖粮食银行旨在储存余粮，然后再分配给有需要的人。低保户可以向粮食银行申请食物；与此同时，公司和附近的超市可以捐赠袋装大米或食用油等食物。

By Nov. 6, the food bank already received 8.7 tons of rice and 500 other food items, which was already given to 509 residents.

截至11月6日，这家粮食银行已收到8.7吨大米和500份其他食品，并已发放到509位居民手中。

Food banks are not new in China, but the overall number of such institutions is limited, due to a lack of supervision and risk managements.

食物银行（粮食银行）在中国并不是新事物，但是由于缺乏监督和风险管理，此类机构的总数有限。

It has, however, regained some popularity in recent months. In Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, six KFC outlets recently introduced a food bank program that gives unsold food to people in need for free.

不过，最近几个月，食物银行似乎又重新流行起来。前不久，广东深圳的6家肯德基门店推出了“食物银行”项目，将未售完的食品免费提供给有需要的人。

By definition, a food bank is a non-profit, charitable organization that distributes food to those in need. The world's first food bank opened in the U.S. in 1967.

Last year, more than 35 million people in the United States struggled to find food. This year, that number has nearly doubled, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's September Household Survey. To help people cope with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, some food banks in the U.S. have been actively distributing food.
