China

 

1. Sixty-two new confirmed COVID-19 cases (including 59 from abroad), two new fatalities and 137 asymptomatic cases were reported on the Chinese mainland on April 7, according to China's National Health Commission. The number of confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland stands at 81,802, with 3,333 deaths related to the virus.  

 

2. Two new imported COVID-19 cases (one each in Shenzhen and Foshan) and one new indigenous case infected by imported infections (in Guangzhou) were reported in Guangdong yesterday. As of April 7, the province has recorded 1,536 confirmed cases, of which 175 were from abroad.

 

Five more asymptomatic infections were identified in the province yesterday, including two each in Guangzhou and Dongguan, and one in Shenzhen.

 

3. After 76 days in strict lockdown, Wuhan in Central China's Hubei Province, which was the first to bear the brunt of what has become a global pandemic, reopened to the outside world this morning. The province said yesterday that it will stick to first-level emergency response in tackling COVID-19, even as Wuhan, lifts travel restrictions.

 

4. The 127th session of the China Import and Export Fair, or the Canton Fair, will be held online in June. The decision was announced at the State Council executive meeting on April 7th.

 

5. Chinese passengers who are going to fly to China from 26 countries are required to submit their health information prior to boarding the plane, starting April 8, the country's civil aviation regulator said on April 7.

 

The 26 countries are: Italy, the United States, Spain, Germany, Iran, France, South Korea, Switzerland, Britain, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Australia, Brazil, Turkey, Malaysia, Denmark, Canada, Israel, the Czech Republic, Ireland, the Philippines, and Thailand.

 

World

 

1. The number of COVID-19 cases around the world hit 1,414,738, with 81,259 fatalities, as of 7:10 a.m. on April 8 (Beijing Time), according to latest data from Johns Hopkins University (JHU).

 

Data from JHU showed that the number of confirmed cases in the United States has surpassed 396,000 with more than 12,000 deaths, as of 7:11 a.m. April 8 (Beijing Time).

 

New York state overtook Italy on April 7 in the number of overall cases of COVID-19, with more than 138,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

 

2. France on April 7 became the fifth country across the globe to have more than 100,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, following the US, Spain, Italy and Germany.

 

As of April 7, France has registered 10,328 deaths from COVID-19, making it the fourth country to cross that threshold of 10,000 after Italy, Spain and the United States.

 

3. According to the Africa Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (Africa CDC), a total of 10,075 COVID-19 cases have now been reported in 52 of the continent’s 54 countries.

 

4. More than four out of five people, or 81 percent of the global workforce of 3.3 billion are currently affected by full or partial workplace closures due to COVID-19 pandemic, according to a report by the International Labor Organization (ILO) published on Tuesday.

 

5. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was in stable condition with the coronavirus Tuesday in a hospital intensive care unit, where he was given oxygen but was breathing on his own without a ventilator, officials said.

 

6. The Olympic flame will be removed from display in Japan, officials said Tuesday, as the country braces for a state of emergency due to the coronavirus that also forced the historic postponement of Tokyo 2020.

 

7. U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday expressed displeasure with the World Health Organization (WHO), saying it was too "China-centric", threatening to withhold U.S. funding.

 

8. Austria will enact a gradual easing of its coronavirus lockdown measures next week, which would make it the first EU country to take steps toward normalization, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz announced Monday.
